Welcome
to The New R2 Update
|
 By
GSGT Dave Lowe
Region Two CompOps
Greetings
from the man behind the curtain at secondfleet.org and welcome to the
newfangled R2 Update. Now 75% less lame and
made with Xylitol!
We hope you enjoy everything we have for you this month. We plan to do
this every two months now. Our publication schedule is to release via
email and on the website on the 15th of the month on ODD months.
Deadlines for submissions are the 15th of the month on EVEN months for
inclusion in the next issue.
Transition of moving secondfleet.org to Dreamhost, the new server has
progressed well. The new account was established last week at a
substantial savings to the Region. Thanks to Jack for taking point on
the transition and making it happen. All files have been moved over,
but I still need to coordinate with Danny Potts on the needs of the
Historian. His new site is a database driven wiki. It will need some
extra care and feeding before we pull the plug on Liquidweb.
IRC meetings have gone well.
Strong attendance, good crowd. logs of all
chats since I have taken office have been posted. The addition of the
new Ajax IRC widget provided by Mibbit Dot Com has been excellent.
Many
users from the region, plus many from all over STARFLEET, are using the
service.
I am ramping up the "R2 Dispatches" once again on the website, the
"online weblog" for the region. As the head of the Dispatches blog, I
am always looking for active contributors. If you feel you can post an
article or two a week for this new venture, please contact me at compops@secondfleet.org
and I will set you up an account to work as an
author. The best articles on the weblog will be forwarded to the Chief
of Communications for inclusion in the bimonthly R2 Update and also to
the STARFLEET Communique, if the work is good enough.
On a geeky backend front, I added Google's Analytics service to the
site to track visitors and their statistics. Data has been very
promising. We have increased hits and referred visits, so at least our
link is getting out there. Some oddities, according to the numbers,
Google searches account for 11.36% of our traffic in the past 30 days.
46.97% are direct hits (no referral) and 10.10% come from the USS Tiberius
website, 4.29% from SFI.ORG, and 4.04% from my own
home page, DAVEDORM.COM
Also, the new event calendar has been added to the site using Google's
calendar service. I am working to add all regional events to the
calendar, plus birthdays of members in the region. If you have an event
or birthday to add, please email compops@secondfleet.org
and we'll get it
up there. Please check it out at http://calendar.secondfleet.org
Overall, things are running smoothly in the department. As you can see
from the shiny new R2 Update, the CompOps and Communications
Departments worked together to release this new "e-zine" format. While
Ralph and I may not see eye to eye on everything, and we may have words
occasionally, no trout were harmed in the production of this
newsletter. Well over 50 people have subscribed at the time of this
writing, and I hope to increase that number before we "print" this
issue.
I must give mad props to Captain Eric L. Watts of the USS Republic
for the
idea that sparked this rebooting of the R2 Update. Eric has been
publishing the electronic newsletter of the USS Republic, " The
Republiqué" in this manner for some time and done an
exemplary job.
None of Eric's source code (which he did all himself, I might add!) has
been duplicated here, but his work was my inspiration for making this
change in the way we get the word out to the region. Thanks,
Eric! [Back]

Region Two Regional Coordinator
(paradigm
shift: a major change in a certain thought-pattern — a radical change
in personal beliefs, complex systems or organizations, replacing the
former way of thinking or organizing with a radically different way of
thinking or organizing.)
You
are looking at a paradigm shift, my friends. For years, at all levels
of STARFLEET, there has raged a constant debate over the digital versus
tangible, physical trappings of membership. The biggest problem is that
people, in general, do not like change.
- “We have always had a printed
newsletter/Communiqué”
- “We have to print out the handbook.”
- “What else does our dues money cover?”
- “It’s the way we have always done it.”
We are about to finish out the first decade of the 21st Century, and
yet we are still desperately holding onto trappings of the past. As
Trek fans, we have always prided ourselves on being forward thinking.
We were watching a TV show that foresaw some of the things we now take
for granted in our every day lives: cell phones, internet, GPS, desktop
PCs, portable computers, etc. And yet the whining and crying goes on
when someone asks, “Why do we still print a newsletter?”
The numbers of American homes with internet access ranges anywhere from
68% - 75%. I would dare say that among that number you would find many
of our members. Of the 29 chapters in Region 2 there are only 3 or 4
with either no access or limited access either through work or a public
use computer. The argument most often made for not going digital was
that we would be alienating those without the internet. The numbers do
not support that argument any longer.
Would we really be alienating membership by going more digital? Would
we not actually be leading by example? Wouldn’t we actually be saying
that, as Trek fans, we embrace the future and make use of the most
advanced technology to enhance the fan experience?
The Region 2 battle cry is “Second to None!” Let’s hope that we will be
leading Fleet by example with this “re-imagined” R2 Update. Kudos to
CAPT Eric L. Watts for making the USS Republic e-newsletter the example
to follow. A round of applause to Dave Lowe and Ralph Planthold for
pulling the details together. I am hoping that the ease of
“publication” and distribution will not only make this a good
newsletter but a constant source of news and information for Region 2.

Star
Trek: The Experience Closes after Ten-Year Journey Through
the Cosmos
|
By
Lt JG Scott M. Crawford, Ph.D.
USS Haise, Jackson,
MS
It
was with great sadness that STAR
TREK: THE EXPERIENCE closed September
1st, 2008, after slightly more than a decade of serving sci-fi fans
from around the globe. Having opened in January, 1998, the
attraction was later upgraded in 2004 to feature two separate theme
rides: The KLINGON ENCOUNTER and the BORG INVASION 4-D.
Several members of the USS Haise,
Jackson Mississippi’s chapter of STARFLEET International led by Fleet
Captain Lucy Ferron, opted to make the journey to Las Vegas in
August. The “pilgrimage” was the first for five of the six
members who went, and was eagerly anticipated by all. It
turned out to be well worth the effort.
The crew members bought an all-day “Captain’s” package deal, which
included unlimited rides through the theme simulations, dinner at
Quark’s restaurant, and souvenir glass and pictures on the Enterprise-D
bridge. Despite word that attendance had been down during
recent years, fans from all over seemed to be taking one last
opportunity to see the exhibit, as the line at Quark's was at least an
hour long, and the park was packed with fans in costumes and Trek
t-shirts. Actors variously dressed as a Borg drone, female
Andorian commander, or Klingon general, moved amongst the guests posing
for pictures, making funny quips about “humans,” and interacting with
the crew.
The highly detailed timeline of Star Trek “history” was the most
comprehensive display known to TREK fandom, beginning in what we know
as our past and going long into the future, incorporating the first
four TV series. The Haise
crew found it impossible to spend enough time to review the details
thoroughly in a single day. It was all they could do to get
through both rides, do the “behind the scenes” tour, and eat
dinner. Some members were able to get through both rides
twice, but that was pushing the limits of both time and stamina.
In the Klingon Encounter, participants were told that one of them was
the direct ancestor of Captain Picard, who was being hunted down in our
present day by a rogue Klingon commander bent on erasing Picard’s
future existence. There was a highly convincing transporter
simulation that literally took your breath away, then a turbulent space
shuttle ride, complete with starship battle sequences and massive
special effects.
The Borg Invasion was also quite engaging, as actors played the roles
of STARFLEET personnel fighting an onslaught of the cybernetic fiends
led by Alice Krige, reprising her role as the “Borg Queen”.
Robert Picardo plays the “Doctor” and Kate Mulgrew stars as “Admiral
Janeway”. In this adventure, the guests are told they have a
strong genetic resistance to Borg “nanites”, only to be captured and
injected by the evil Borg probes. The seats of the ride are
specially rigged with devices which prod the viewers, producing the
convincing sensation that nanites are indeed circulating inside their
body. The Doctor valiantly tries to fight the Queen long
enough for Janeway to lead Voyager again in a dramatic battle to free
the participants from the Borg Cube and save the galaxy.
Finally, in the “Secrets Unveiled” tour, USS HAISE members were treated
to a guided journey backstage, showing how all the effects worked,
including the complex ride simulations. The actors’ dressing
rooms were packed with memorabilia along the walls and one could spend
an hour there alone looking at well wishes from various celebrities.
Indeed, as one entered the Experience, there were large walls full of
supportive statements written by fans, urging the Las Vegas Hilton to
reconsider closing the Experience. Others left pictures of
their visit and statements of appreciation for the ten years of service
to the TREK community. This author left a letter by the HAISE
crew in homage to the venerable institution.
It is not known exactly what will replace the STAR TREK
EXPERIENCE at
the Las Vegas Hilton. Rumors abound. One of the
HAISE crew heard that it would be turned into a “nightclub,” but this
is not known to be true. Several people commented at the
absurdity of closing the Trek theme park with a new movie being
released next summer. When the tour guides heard our
lamentations, they could only reply that we were “preaching to the
choir.” Indeed, members of STARFLEET INTERNATIONAL
will deeply miss STAR
TREK: THE EXPERIENCE, and express great gratitude
to the staff and actors over the years that made it possible.
[Publisher’s
note: As of press time, the latest word as
relayed by the USS Angeles listserve from “In Business Las Vegas” is
that STAR TREK:
THE EXPERIENCE will occupy a portion of Neonopolis, the
Downtown Las Vegas mall on Fremont Street, and may reopen in time for
the premiere of the STAR TREK XI movie.] [Back]

Regional Coordinator Report

FCAPT Lucy Ferron
Region Two Vice Regional Coordinator
Elections
are all around us! Presidential, Senatorial, local offices in
some parts, and Region 2 Coordinator, too. The Presidential
election process has been going on for so long it is hard for me to
believe it will (finally) be over in a matter of weeks as I write
this. No matter your affiliation or preferences, the most
important thing is to participate – VOTE!
SFI Communications has requested submissions from any and all members
on the topic of what STARFLEET means to you. A paragraph or
two is sufficient, as many such submissions will be combined in the
anniversary special CQ #150. Submit articles and
photos to cq@sfi.org.
I intend to put
thoughts to keyboard and send one myself. I encourage you to
do so as well, in the
hopes we will have a great representation from members of Region 2.
One thing that means a lot to me has been the fellowship we enjoy when
we do community service projects together. In October, the
USS Haise
participated in the Walk for Diabetes and a clean-up project
with Keep Jackson Beautiful. Working together for the common
good has brought us closer as a crew and given us the chance to get to
know each other better than we would have if we only had "business"
meetings. With the advent of the revised publication process
for the R2 Update, I encourage you all to send in information about
your community service projects. And it doesn’t have to be
just the CO that submits! Any crew member can send it in for
the ship, or get your Chief of Communications to submit
something. We have many willing hands in the Region, and I
hope you will start sharing with the rest of us all the wonderful
things that you do to help others. Fall is prime time for
fundraising walks. Let’s find out how many walks Region 2
members have participated in!
December 1 is the first registration "cut off" for Summit
2009: On December 1 the price goes up another $5 per person
(for families that does indeed make a difference). Give
yourself an early holiday present – register for Summit! You
can register
online from the R2 website using PayPal, or you can
print off a copy of the registration form and mail it in to Sandy Dolan
(with check or M.O. made out to "Jack Eaton"). Gas prices
have been dropping, so make your plans to come. Put in that
Leave Request at work, and have that day off secured. The
Budget Inn & Banquet hotel is not able to take online room
reservations since it went "independent"; so please call them directly
(601-944-1150), and ask for the group rate/group block of rooms for
"STARFLEET Region 2." Those dates again are March 6 – 8,
2009. Apollo 13 Astronaut Fred Haise will be our special
guest and speaker. Many of you watched the Discovery Channel
special series "When We Left Earth," and saw Fred
interviewed. Here’s your chance to meet him in person!
Before I close I want to thank Col. Oliver "Ollie" Savander, SR for
taking on the new position of Region 2 Relay Officer. His
dedication to the task is "Second to None!"
Peace and Long Life! Happy Thanksgiving! [Back]

Komen
Race For The Cure
|
 By
Admiral
Dave Ryan
CO, USS
Marathon
Team STARFLEET, consisting of members of the USS
Marathon
and the USS Tiberius,
participated in the 10th Anniversary Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure
in St. Petersburg, FL on Saturday, October 4, 2008.
Team STARFLEET was co-captained by Admiral Dave Ryan and Colonel
Oliver Savander. The Team was supported by Region Two Coordinator, COMM
Jack Eaton. Communications services were coordinated by Gunnery
Sergeant Dave Lowe of the Tiberius.
Quoting
from ST: TMP, GSgt Dave was heard to have said, “Admiral, these
departure orders... it’s only 0500!” To which the good Admiral
responded, “It’s gonna be fun, doggone it!” They picked up Ollie and
proceeded to the team set up area, which appeared to be about a ¼ mile
walk from the parking lot. Following are pictures of our command post.
The team raised $320; not bad for a first effort! We were thrilled
that many members contributed to the event, including COMM Matt Moyer,
STARFLEET CompOps Chief. Let’s make this better than ever next year!
The team talked about STARFLEET to many people, and distributed
numerous fliers before the event itself.
This consisted of a choice of races – a competitive 10K, a
competitive 5K, a 5K walk and a 1-mile walk. There were also survivor
tributes, along with other events geared towards education about the
disease.
 The
Susan G. Komen Society is instrumental in breast cancer research,
support for individuals battling the disease, and survivorship. In the
past 10 years, the society has raised $20 million in the St. Petersburg
area alone. This 10th anniversary event itself raised $1,003,942.00.
The main part of RFTC that is important is that up to 75% stays in the
Suncoast Region (Hillsborough, Pinellas, Manatee, Pasco, and Polk
counties in the West/Central FL area).
On a personal note, the intrepid members of Team STARFLEET had a great
time just hammering out the details for the event. On the Friday before
the race, Dave, Dave, and Ollie visited the race site, did some recon
on where we would be setting up, and so on. Hungry and parched, our
heroes ended up at Quaker
Steak and Lube in Pinellas Park.
The Brave Captains and their trusty sidekick enjoyed a hearty lunch
buffet and a “Lube Tube” to wash it down. If you want to know what a
“Lube Tube” is, be sure to ask one of us at Summit! [Back]

At
this time Security is still getting moved into his new

in R2, but body now living and working at:

Kansas City, MO 64109-1345.
Things are mostly quiet, although my 2nd night here we had a big
gang-related shoot out 1½ blocks from where I live now: Cops, Feds, the
whole 9 yards. Now that’s entertainment!
Other than that, getting ready for next year’s R2 Summit. No
problems to report as of this time, and hope we have a good showing at

RADM Denby Potts
Zone 3 Coordinator
Greetings
one and all,
Hope everyone had a great Summer and is having a great Fall, so
far. This year the International Conference was held in
Ithaca, NY. Once again Region 2 came out on top, walking away with an
International Award: Congratulations to Nancy O'Shields, the CO of the New Hope, for
winning the Commanding Officer of the Year!
 Many
chapters have had pool parties and cookouts, and some are gearing up
for a Renaissance Fair and/or a Fall Feast. Many chapters
have participated in the nomination phase of the R2 Regional
Coordinator election; and all are looking forward to the 2009 Summit in
Jackson, MS. That pretty much does it for the state of
Alabama. [Back]

Second
Brigade Report
|
 By
GEN Wade
Olson
Second Brigade Officer in Charge
Greetings:
The
Marines are still very active in Second Brigade and recently brought
home more honors from the International Conference. But first I wish to
announce a couple of awards I missed in the last Submission.
Sal Lizard issued two STARFLEET Cross awards during the Region Two
summit this year to well deserving Second Brigade Marines:
This
award is given by the Commander STARFLEET to recognize efforts made by
STARFLEET Marines to a degree that it not only affects the STARFLEET
Marine Corps but STARFLEET as well. Congratulations, Marines!
During
the Region Two Summit this year the Marine annual Brigade Awards were
issued. This year the 674th Marine Strike Group aboard the USS Relentless
was awarded the Legion of Valor, the Second Brigade Marine Unit of the
Year award, as it were. I am happy to announce that at the
International Conference the 674th MSG was also awarded the Legion of
Honor, equivalent to the STARFLEET Marine Unit of the Year. As a
result, the USS Relentless was awarded the Naval Unit Citation by the
STARFLEET Marine Corps for having the Legion of Honor recipient
attached to their ship.
Recently, the STARFLEET Marine Corps
activated a new ribbon and award to its award system. It’s called a
Distinguished Service Cross, and it’s given to any member of the SFMC
to recognize their lengthy and dedicated service to the SFMC. This
Award has only been issued twice so far, both at the International
Conference in Ithaca, NY. The recipients were:
- Martin Lessem, 7th Brigade
- Wade Olson, 2nd Brigade
To
read the full criteria, all interested parties are directed to the
Marine Force Manual. Anyone wanting a copy of the latest Marine Force
Manual (MFM) can visit the SFMC website at
http://www.sfi-sfmc.org or can download it directly from here.
Now for Brigade Stats:
The Second Brigade currently has 66 Marines reported. We have 11 Units
in the Brigade; 8 reported, 3 did not.
3 Marine Awards were issued during the last reporting period. All were
Academic Excellence Awards:
- MGEN Rebecca Louise Self (1)
- MGEN Catherine Ramsey (2)
I
would like to remind all Marines of the STARFLEET Marine Corps Reading
Challenge. This is an ongoing competition with awards given every year
at the IC. Your reading information should be included in the
bi-monthly reports to the Brigade OIC. Information should include name
of reader, name of book, ISBN number of book, author, and number of
pages.
That’s all for now. Have a great fall. [Back]

Auctioneer
Report
|
 By VADM Freddy Heller
Region Two Auctioneer
Greetings Region 2!
In
case you do not know by now, I am your new Region 2 Auctioneer, having
taken the position from Pete Mohney at the 2008 Region 2 Summit. I
would like to thank Pete for the great job he did during his tenure as
auctioneer, and I hope that I will be able to do as good a job as he
did.
First, I have to apologize for not having done an article
for the last Region 2 Update. My only excuse (and a poor one at that)
was that I did not know I had to do one; and when I was reminded that I
needed to do one, I was out of town and thus failed to do what I was
supposed to do. Understand?
Anyway, I have given some thought as
to what kind of items you would like to see at future auctions; but
what I think is a great addition may not be what you think is a great
addition, and I do not wish to get stuck with a bunch of useless items.
So, here is where I need your input. Think about what you would like to
see in future auctions no matter how outlandish or bizarre it may be.
Do you wish to see autographs and/or action figures? Let me know. How
about posters or other commercial type items? Let me know. Do you wish
to see items from sci-fi venues other than Star Trek such as Star Wars,
Stargate
or Firefly/Serenity,
etc.? Let me know. Send me your input to
uss.davinci@knology.net,
and place “Region 2 Auction Items” in the
subject line. I will keep track of all the suggestions and report the
findings in subsequent Region 2 Updates.
The current auction
items are sitting in a half dozen or so boxes in my garage. I glanced
over the items briefly when they were turned over to me, but have not
had a chance to look the items over thoroughly. As soon as I do, I will
report the “good, the bad, and the ugly” to the Region.
If you have any other ideas on how to make the Region Two Auctioneer
work for you, please feel free to email or call me.
Finally,
if you plan on attending the Region 2 Summit in Jackson, MS next year,
make sure you bring your checkbook! I will be digging deep into my Star
Trek memorabilia collection and donating something that
will probably
never come around again and you just might die to have in your
collection. What is it? Well, I will not be exact; but I will tell you
that it is something from one of the shows!! [Back]

Biofunction
monitor
The biofunction monitor is a small display located at the head of some
biobeds.

It gives continually updated information on patient vital signs, such
as pulse, respiration, temperature, and brain activity. It has been a
staple of starship sickbays since the NX class. Click picture to see a
larger image.
Biocomputer
A
biocomputer was a specialized 23rd century instrument for solving
biological problems. About 50 cm × 25 cm × 25 cm, it had a series of
front panel data entry controls and status indicators. It lacked a
direct telemetry interface to the ship's computers; the user required a
communicator or other separate means of exchanging data with a
starship.
Detronal
scanner

A
detronal scanner is a handheld device which can read and interpret the
genetic structure of living tissue. Dr. Toby Russell manually used a
detronal scanner to scan the DNA of Worf's damaged spinal column during
a surgery involving the genitronic replicator in 2368. The replicator
had difficulties in reading the Klingon dorsal root ganglia, forcing
the doctor to resort to the manual scan. (TNG: "Ethics") [Back]

- Note 1: This was a higher
than usual amount for Vonage. To make up for this, a payment
for Liquid Web was made by the RC to cover most of this amount.
- Note 2: This was an inadvertent
use of the Regional Card and will show as paid back by the RC on the
next
statement.
